Thoughtless
Much of the songwriting for 'Sin' can be broken up into three parts. A few songs were written shortly after Mindsize was recorded, during various tours, etc.. A large majority of the songs were written in the two weeks preceding our recording dates - in our church youth room. The final few songs were written in the studio, "on-the-fly" or something like that. This song is one of the few that I have distinct memories of us writing in the two weeks before recording started. It came like a shot. The guys came up with the music - moody and powerful, and I slipped out of the room to write some lyrics. Like many of our songs, I don't remember *actually* writing the lyrics, but I know that these words came quickly - very quickly. Maybe that's part of the reason that I've always liked this song so much..

Ive been mixed in dark and light today, you know. And Im sure it does not please or bless or show. Still theres something to be said. However far beyond my nose, I know.
Speak Soft
(lyrics by The Swoon). . A wonderful song. Although The Swoon only recorded one album that we know of, it was all that we needed. In fact, it was difficult to pick which track to record... we just knew that we wanted to cover one of their songs. As we started to work through the parts of the song, it really started to come together. Nick's bass was recorded with the snare drum chain loose... so you could hear the rattle. Aaron mimicked the acoustic parts perfectly. The agressive bridge was our own twist on things, but fitting I think. Finally, we added a Beatle-esque "Day In The Life" build-up ending to finish it off. It came out just as we wanted. What more can I say? I'll just add the notes from the 'Straight Six' album cover....
Sometimes Cry
Another song that had been recorded previously, it first appeared on our 1992 independent release, Star-Studded-Super-Step. Sometimes Cry was a fairly popular song in concert, partially because of the catchy chorus. The original recording featured an ending that literally fell apart with drum beats, guitars, and percussion going all over the place. This was accomplished with the original 8-track recorders 'SEL-REP' buttons, as they were called. Essentially, it allowed some tracks to be read from the play heads, while the other tracks were read from the recording heads. The Mindsize version featured a similar 'breakdown' at the end..
So Good To See Me
This song never really went anywhere. Definitely the song that no one could remember the name of, it didn't accomplish a whole lot.. . Lyrically, this song is obviously a farce. Taking 'selfism' and putting it into the light for what it does, and how wrong it is..
Slow
This song is probably one of the 'filler' tracks on 'Sin'. It wasn't a single. It wasn't much of a concert hit. In fact, this song was rarely mentioned at all. Why is that? Who knows. Maybe it's just not that good. It was one of the rare mellow tracks on 'Sin'. Slightly dreamy and somewhat playful. Aaron came up with some good background vocals, and Nick's bass line quite nice. I suppose 'Slow' just helped round out the album. We'll leave it at that..
Slipknot
Of all the Poor Old Lu songs to show up on Napster in great number, this one did. I always found that strange until I heard that there was also a band called Slipknot. I can only imagine all those people who downloaded this song thinking it was the other band! Very amusing..
Sickly
'Sickly' was written entirely in the studio over the course of a few hours. The guys (Aaron, Nick & Jesse) began to jam on a moody song in the main room while I (Scott) tried to work out a suitable melody and lyrics. Without much warning 'Sickly' was born. Very moody. Slightly aggressive. Quiet and loud. 'Sickly' remains one of my very favorite Lu songs - partly because I think it's a good song, and partly because of how mysteriously it came to be. Coupled with 'My World Falls Down' on the tail end, 'Sickly' has also been a favorite concert song. An equally moody video for 'Sickly' can be found on Poor Old Lu's 1995 video cassette, 'Sit & Stare'..
Shutting Down
good night. sleep tight. the sun is set. and day is night. just you rest. it's all alright. but it's the same,. day to day. why can't i. sleep this away.
Shine
'Shine' was written awhile before Mindsize was recorded and, in fact, had no ties (musically) to any other songs that we had written. It was set apart in that it featured piano, something we hadn't had much of before. In retrospect, naming the song 'Shine' wasn't the brightest idea (no pun intended)... since every band out there seems to have a 'Shine' song. Oh well..
Ring True
'Ring True' is probably the most "intentionally" worshipful song that Lu has. Written just before recording 'Sin' (and finished up in the studio), it is probably most notable for its raw sounds, catchy groove, and the fact that Aaron sings lead vocal. 'Ring True' happened to be one of the most successful singles that Lu ever released and was always a fun song for live shows..
Revolve
It promises much, it promises you'll never be cold. The words are such as to turn you until you are sold. And walk in this rut and run in the ground where we know.
Receive
As I look back, 'Receive' is one of the most complete and well-rounded songs we had. Unfortunately, we only played a handful of shows after "8th Wonder" was released, so it never became a huge concert hit that it normally would've been. The times that we were able to play it were great. I've also felt that 'Receive' is one the most representational songs for the typical "Lu" sound!.
Rail
Definitely not the usual way to start an album, but by this time we were doing things our own way, and not for booming record sales. The song was written as is (long intro and all), but the decision to put it at the beginning of the album came later. We weren't concerned. If anything, 'Rail' has a definite vibe of The Cure, one of our favorite bands growing up (except Jesse). 'Rail' still remains as one of my very favorite songs..
Praying For The Perfect World

Peapod
Another song that was first released on our 1992 independent album, Star-Studded-Super-Step. Definitely a concert favorite because of it's funk vibe and catchy, though simple, chorus. Over the years, having someone yell out 'Peapod' during a show was as common as someone yelling 'Freebird'. The version on Mindsize also featured an audio clip from Bob Ross, the happy painter, a tradition started with the Star-Studded cut. In fact, the name of the song came from Bob Ross' little pocket pet, Peapod the Pocket Squirrel..
Now
